So, you have spent a lot of money on your new iPad. You love the way it looks, its speed, and all the awesome apps it has. In fact, you love it so much that you wonder if you really need anything else. Can’t you just replace your cell phone and laptop with your iPad? Well, the answer may surprise you.
No, you can’t replace your cell phone, and I’ll tell you why. An iPad is great for email and web surfing, it is not so great when it comes to accessing the radio waves that cell phones use. In fact, though it has a carrier radio inside it, it is not the same as your cell phone’s radio. An iPad’s radio can only tune into data. That means that in order to talk on the phone, you would have to download a program such as Skype. While that is all well and good, during an emergency it is much more likely to go down then a regular cell phone. The bottom line is this: the iPad is just not set up to be used as a cell phone.
Secondly, no, you really do not want to replace your laptop with your iPad. Why not? Well, for one, an iPad is a great consumer of content, but not such a great producer. While you can download some apps to make it easier to type and blog, the point is that the iPad is just not made for that. If you want to do anything more complex, let’s say photo or video editing, then you’ve got a problem on your hands. Not only is uploading photos a pain, but you have to move from app to app to get things done. That is not something you have to worry about with a laptop.
That’s not to say that new versions of the iPad will not have these capabilities and more. But until then, I recommend you stick with your cell phone and laptop. Just use the iPad for the purpose with witch it was intended and enjoy your new toy!
